Rediscovering Freedom After a Serious Car Accident

Rediscovering Freedom

Lower leg injuries can occur in various ways, from sports accidents to workplace mishaps. However, one common cause that often leads to severe injuries is automobile accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 20% of drivers with moderate to severe injuries in car accidents have at least one lower leg fracture. These incidents can leave individuals facing long and challenging roads to recovery. Let’s delve into Antejuan’s testimonial, showcasing his journey of resilience and adaptation after experiencing a life-altering car accident.

Antejuan's Testimonial: Finding Freedom with the iWALK

Following a devastating car accident in 2019, Antejuan found himself dealing with severe lower leg injuries. Ejected from the vehicle upon impact, he endured fractures to his tibia, fibula, and ankle, marking a significant turning point in his life. “Unfortunately, the impact from landing and the broken bones didn’t allow me to get more than a few feet. The car was on fire, my mother and sister were still trapped inside and I was powerless to help them.”

However, amidst the wreckage and despair, he found a glimmer of hope on the lawn of a nearby establishment where bystanders and paramedics came to their aid.

The next day he woke up disoriented. “My ankle was only attached by an apparatus. I was in the hospital for 2 days then sent home with my ankle just dangling from my shin.” He then went through a few weeks of regular visits with an Orthopedic specialist. At first, things looked promising but he remained non-weight-bearing. This continued for 2 more months. Eventually, he worked up the courage to ask, “What was wrong with me? A break should only take 6 or so weeks and we’re months in.” The doctors explained that bones had pierced his skin during the accident and led to a bacterial infection.

Multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy lay ahead, with doctors delivering the grim prognosis of a life dependent on assisted mobility devices. He was informed that he would most likely develop Post Traumatic Arthritis of the Ankle and that this is a degenerative disease, meaning it will only get worse as he gets older. Antejuan was to expect to be on traditional crutches or an assisted walking device for the rest of his life.

New Found Independence with the iWALK Hands-Free Crutch

Having exhausted all conventional medical methods short of a bone fusion, which would only give him 10 years of pain-free movement he had to find another option. “I’ve tried all different types of devices such as leg braces, ankle braces, custom fit molds, even the elbow crutches and wheelchairs.”  Unfortunately, being he has had an infection in his ankle, doctors say there’s no telling when the arthritis will set in. Luckily, he found the iWALK, where he discovered a newfound sense of liberation, allowing him to engage in daily activities with unprecedented ease. It was a turning point in his journey, signaling a significant shift.

“Nothing gives me independence like the iWALK. The iWALK literally allows me to shop with 2 hands, high-five random people who think I’m cool when they see it, be a barber, keep up with my 4 and 5-year-old boys, and WALK!”

As he continues his journey forward, Antejuan serves as a beacon of inspiration for others facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with perseverance and resilience, anything is possible.
