Travis Mills was a combat soldier who lost both his arms and legs due to an IED explosion in 2012 in Afghanistan. He overcame these injuries through determination, courage and humor. The experience shaped his life and gave it a new direction – to help others who have had similar experiences.
Through his rehabilitation, he found his greatest source of strength was his family. He set a goal to create a place where other veteran amputees could spend quality time with each other and their families, and share experiences to help overcome the challenges associated with limb loss.
The Travis Mills Foundation supports combat injured veterans and their families through their retreat located in Rome, Maine. The foundation purchased the historic Maine Chance Lodge originally built in 1929 by cosmetics icon Elizabeth Arden. Veterans and their families stay at the retreat and are surrounded by others who are have shared experiences. This helps the veterans and their families relax, reconnect and reintegrate into life through camaraderie, support and shared experiences.
